چکیده

Establishing the geometry of foam cells is useful in developing microstructure-based acoustic and structuralmodels. Since experimental data on thegeometryof the foamcells are limited, mostmodeling efforts use an idealized three-dimensional, space-filling Kelvin tetrakaidecahedron. The validity of this assumption is investigated in the present paper. Several FeCrAlY foamswith relative densities varying between 3 and 15% and cells per mm (c.p.mm.) varying between 0.2 and 3.9 c.p.mm. were microstructurally evaluated. The number of edges per face for each foam specimen was counted by approximating the cell faces by regular polygons, where the number of cell faces measured varied between 207 and 745. The present observations revealed that 50–57% of the cell faces were pentagonal while 24–28% were quadrilateral and 15–22% were hexagonal. The present measurements are shown to be in excellent agreement with literature data. It is demonstrated that the Kelvin model, as well as other proposed theoretical models, cannot accurately describe the FeCrAlY foam cell structure. Instead, it is suggested that the ideal foam cell geometry consists of 11 faces with 3 quadrilateral, 6 pentagonal faces and 2 hexagonal faces consistent with the 3–6–2 Matzke cell. Simulation of Foaming and Deformation for Composite Aluminum Foams

In this study, at the first stage, the rupture criterion of bubbles wall in Aluminum metal foam liquid was investigated by using Lattice Boltzmann. The two phases modeling were accomplished by using a modified Shan-Chen model. This model was run for several bubbles in A356+3wt.%SiC melt system. Then, bubbles morphologies (virtual metallographic) for A356+3wt.%SiC foams were simulated. Results s...

Thermal-insulation performance of low density polyethylene (LDPE) foams: Comparison between two radiation thermal conductivity models

The loss of energy especially in industrial and residential buildings is one of the main reasons of increased energy consumption. Improving the thermal insulation properties of materials is a fundamental method for reducing the energy losses. Polymeric foams are introduced as materials with excellent thermal insulation properties for this purpose. In the present study, a deep theoretical invest...

Effect of Fe additive on plastic deformation for crush-boxes with closed-cell metal foams, Part I: Al-composite foam compression response

AbstractIn this paper, we investigate effect of Fe–intermetallic compounds on plastic deformation of closed-cell composite Aluminum Foam as filler of thin-walled tubes. However, deformation of the Aluminum foam-filled thin-walled tubes as crushed-box will be presented in Part (II). Composite foams of AlSi7SiC3 and AlSi7SiC3-(Fe) as closed cell were synthesized by powder metallurgy foaming metho...

Effect of non-acoustic properties on the sound absorption of polyurethane foams

In this paper the influence of non-acoustic properties on the sound absorption coefficient of polyurethane foams as a porous medium is investigated. Biot’s equations with transfer matrix method, as the solution approach are employed to evaluate the sound absorption coefficient of selected polyurethane foams. The major issue is the dependency of non-acoustic properties on each other which makes ...

In-situ Quasistatic Compression and Microstructural Characterization of Aluminum Foams of Different Cell Topology

Metallic foams have good potential for lightweight structures for impact and blast mitigation. Therefore it is important to find out the optimized foam structure (i.e. cell size, shape, relative density, and distribution) to maximise energy absorption. In this paper, quasistatic compression and microstructural characterization of closed-cell aluminium foams of different pore size and cell distr...
